This guide has been written for the EL Falcon GT, a limited edition model built in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the XR Falcon GT. Like its predecessor the EB Falcon GT, the EL GT was produced through the joint venture of Ford Australia and Tickford Vehicle Engineering (TVE). The EL GT was sold in the Australian, New Zealand and South African markets with an original price of $69,500 (AUD). Classic Register maintains a register of EL GT Falcon cars here, and we encourage owners to submit the details of their vehicles, so the history of individual cars can be preserved.[1]

Like the EB GT, the 30th anniversary EL GT was aimed toward the luxury performance sedan market, with initial testing commencing in 1995. All EL GT vehicles were based on the up-market Fairmont Ghia model,[2] although now they had their own unique model code,  and received unique performance enhancements.

The EL GT has a number of unique features which distinguish it from its standard counterparts and other Tickford engineered Falcons, and their specifications and low production numbers have naturally made them modern classics. This guide aims to clearly outline the original specifications of these vehicles, and provide prospective restorers or purchasers with relevant background information. Period of manufacture:

  • Production cars were built from 17 February 1997[3] – June 1997.[4]
  • Pre-production vehicles were built from late 1995 (the HGT vehicles), with P numbered vehicles built from around September 1996.[5]

Production numbers:

272 vehicles were produced in total (150 vehicles were manual, 122 were automatic). This excludes the 5 early test vehicles which were not full specification Falcon GTs, as explained below.


Production vehicles: 272[6]

  • 250 sold in Australia (including cars numbered P01 – P11 + cars numbered 001 – 239).
  • 2 sold in South Africa, referred to as Samcor cars (numbered 240 - 241).
  • 20 exported to New Zealand (numbered NZ1 – NZ20).

 

Early test vehicles: 5[7]

  • These vehicles were numbered HGT1 – HGT5. They were built from late 1995 and were used to develop individual aspects of the EL GT, but were separate from the ‘P’ numbered vehicles. The HGT vehicles were not full GT spec cars, and only had certain aspects of the GT modifications applied for testing. For example, specific testing for aspects such as suspension setup, brake development, cooling system and body kit design, were applied to separate cars.[8]
  • According to Project 064 - the 30th Anniversary GT Story[9] all HGT mule vehicles were refurbished and sold off, and several enthusiasts have noted these vehicles as being present at car shows over the years, including a silver EL GT. This silver GT has been labelled a replica by some, but it has been suggested the car was used to develop the GT's body kit [10]  and it is supposedly listed as "colour incorrect" on page 12 of the media kit product launch.[11] [12]

 



1. Exterior features - 1997 Ford Falcon EL GT

The EL GT had the following exterior features:[13] [14] [15] [16]

  • Vehicles were available in three colour options: Sparkling Burgundy, Navy Blue and Heritage Green. The driving lamp housing, lower front bumper splitter and parts of the side skirts were finished in a grey-silver colour. For further details, see section 3 of this guide.
  • A colour-coded fibre-glass body kit was fitted, including revised bumpers, front and rear diffusers, side-skirts, central bonnet vent, 11-slot front grille, door rub-strips, wheel-arch flares and a rear spoiler with integrated LED brake lamp. This kit was designed under the direction of Paul Gibson, with the wheel arch flares similar to the preceding EB GT. The wing decreases lift at the back of the car by 70 percent. The front splash guards have been modified and the guards were also cut away to clear the wider tyres. The Fairmont bonnet was also modified to allow the front grille to affect ventilation.
  • At the front end, a Ford badge was mounted above the unique 11-slot grille, and the front bumper had integrated twin 55 watt ZKW driving lights. At the rear, a GT badge was fitted under the left side tail lamp, with the Ford badge positioned under the right side tail lamp.
  • As the GT was based on the EL Fairmont Ghia sedan, features such as colour coded door mirrors and body mouldings applied.
  • The GT sits 59mm overall lower than the standard Falcon / Fairmont. The vehicle’s total height is 1,394mm, compared to 1,405mm for the XR6 / XR8, and 1,453mm for the standard Falcon / Fairmont Ghia.
  • Unique 17 x 8.5 inch 6-spoke ROH alloy wheels were fitted to the GT (Including a full-size spare), finished in a pale silver-gold colour. Each wheel has a unique identification number stamped on the back. We have not yet been able to confirm the precise paint code, so please contact us if you have further information and we will update this section. Wheels were originally fitted with Yokohama A510 245/40 VR17 tyres and had locking wheel nuts with a special coded adaptor socket.
  • Tinted side and rear glass (Smart-Tint UPF 15+). Laminated windscreen with tinted top band.
  • Chrome oval exhaust tip.
  • Optional factory-installed sun roof (additional cost of $2,813).
  • Tickford badges were applied to the front guards, behind the wheel arches.
  • Clear indicators integrated with the body mouldings at the rear of the front wheel arches.
  • Optional class two 1,600kg tow pack (additional cost of $1,270).
2. Interior features - 1997 Ford Falcon EL GT

Based on the EL Fairmont Ghia, high end features were fitted to the GT along with unique trim characteristics as outlined below.[17]

  • Seat trim: Sports seats were trimmed in a combination of leather and escaine (a mock suede material), with trim code G3. The leather is two-tone Charcoal / Mako Grey, and the escaine material is a lighter grey. The front seats use EL Falcon police seat frames with uniquely designed trim and padding not used on other models. The driver’s seat had adjustable height and thigh support. Driver and passenger seats had adjustable recline, fore and aft adjustment and vertically adjustable lumbar support.
  • Door trim: Unique door trims with wood grain and escaine inserts (escaine was applied to the arm rests and upper door card insert). Driver and passenger front door trims have GT badges at the front top containing the vehicle’s unique TVE build number (in the same location as where the Ghia badge would usually be fitted to a Fairmont Ghia). Door cards also incorporate carpeted door bins and chrome finish interior door handles.
  • Console and dashboard trim: The centre console storage lid is trimmed in escaine, with the remainder of the console housing finished in the standard grey plastic as applied to other EL models. The rear air-conditioning vents at the rear of the centre console received a burl walnut surround. A velvet pouch containing the locking wheel nut key was originally located in the centre console. The dashboard fascia has a distinct dark grey / black plastic fascia, extending around the base of the gearstick area, and also applied to the steering column. The main fascia has a burl walnut insert applied around the sound system.
    • Automatic vehicles received a burl walnut insert around the gear selector, with a chrome finish selector panel. The selector knob was black perforated leather wrapped, with a chrome finish button. The gear selector panel also features an “adaptive shift” badge.
    • Manual vehicles had a woodgrain / leather gear selector knob with black leather gear stick boot / surround.
    • The handbrake featured black perforated leather and a chrome release button.
  • Carpets: Grey loop pile carpets were fitted to all EL GTs. Contoured grey loop pile front floor mats were fitted standard, and featured an embroidered silver GT monogram.
  • Steering wheel:  A leather 4-spoke Momo steering wheel with the standard EL Falcon air bag was fitted, including cruise control buttons and dual horns. The wheel had integrated woodgrain trim on the upper and lower wheel rim.
  • Instrumentation: 240kph speedometer (with white Tickford logo printed on the gauge face), rpm timer (6,000rpm top, 5,500rpm redline), fuel level, temperature, voltage, oil pressure, high beam warning light, hand brake warning light and a digital trip computer).
  • Headlining / visors: Cloth trimmed headlining and sun-visors (both visors incorporating a light and vanity mirror).
  • Technical features: Climate control AC, cruise control, digital trip computer, power mirrors, power steering, power windows, power antenna, 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system (with tape deck), 6-stack CD system fitted in the trunk, dual air bags, remote central locking, Ford's Smart Lock immobilizer system and an alarm with unique GT arming sound.

 

Other:

  • Front / rear foot-well lamps and front / rear reading lamps.
  • Individually numbered leather key fob with GT badge (containing the car's unique TVE build number).
  • 3-point inertia seatbelts applied to all seats including the centre rear.
  • Full-size spare wheel.
  • Unique hollow headrests were applied to the front and rear seats.
  • Tinted side and rear glass (Smart-Tint UPF 15+). Laminated windscreen with tinted top band.
  • Unique numbered owner’s manual in a leather wallet, embossed with the GT logo. The owner’s manual was signed by David Morgan (Ford Australia president), David Flint (Tickford boss) and Steve Park (Ford Australia design chief).
  • Purchasers received a limited edition GT Print.
  • The EL GT rear floor-pan is uniquely stamped with the Tickford winged logo between the rear shock towers (under the carpet in the middle of the floor, directly behind the rear seats).

 

Optional features:[18]

  • Optional factory installed sun-roof (additional cost of $2,813).
3. Paint colour options - 1997 Ford Falcon EL GT

The production model EL GTs were available in just 3 main body colours,[19] with the associated production numbers and GT build numbers listed below (where we’ve been able to confirm those). The GT's body kit was also finished with grey accents on the lower front bumper splitter and front side-skirt sections, however, we have not yet been able to confirm the paint code for that grey colour.

Pre-production GT colours:[21]

Pre-production GT vehicles were finished in the same colours as the production GTs, with the exception of one pre-production / mule car, painted silver (believed to be Argon Silver, paint code D7). It is believed that this silver car was used for the development of the EL GT body kit, and the vehicle appears in several early production photographs, in addition to having been sighted at several car shows as noted by enthusiasts on Ford forums. Although possibly a replica, a silver EL GT was sold some years ago through Ford Muscle Car Sales.

4. VIN and engine number - 1997 Ford Falcon EL GT

The EL GT VIN is a 17-digit code, and the engine number reflects the last 11 digits of that code. The VIN / engine number should appear in the following format, decoded in accordance with the table below:[22]

The vehicle’s unique serial number

*The range of month manufacturer codes provided is based on the assumption that pre-production GTs would have likely occurred from September 1996 (P01 – P11). Production EL GTs are believed to have commenced in February 1997.[23]

 

VIN number locations:

  1. Reverse stamped into the vehicle’s two data plates (located on the passenger’s side windscreen scuttle panel, riveted to the bulkhead in the engine bay).
  2. Stamped into the vehicle’s body (located on the passenger’s side inner-mudguard edge, between the mudguard edge and suspension strut tower under the bonnet).
  3. Printed on self-erasing VIN labels placed on several panels including the underside of the bonnet and boot lid, inner front mudguard edges, inner rear mudguard edges and on the doors (the door jamb area between the exterior skin and door card).
  4. Printed in black text on the Tickford Vehicle Engineering (TVE) build plate (located on the front edge of the passenger’s side suspension strut, in the engine bay).
  5. The engine number (last 11 digits of the VIN) is stamped into the front edge of the engine block, above the fuel pump.

5. Tickford Vehicle Engineering (TVE) build numbers – 1997 Ford Falcon EL GT

Tickford Vehicle Engineering (TVE) build numbers – Ford Falcon EL GT[25]

All EL GTs received a unique TVE build number, which corresponded to the last 3 digits of the vehicle’s Single Item Dealer Order (SIDO) number. SIDO numbers start at 970001 and end at 970275 inclusive, however 970262 and 970264 are believed to be exceptions.[26] The build number was located in the following positions:

  1. On the TVE build plate, located on the front edge of the passenger’s side suspension tower. This was an aluminium plate riveted to the body panel, with the vehicle’s unique build number printed vertically in black, with a black GT badge to the right of the number. On the right of the plate, there is “Tickford Vehicle Engineering” printed over a Tickford logo (all in red), and the vehicle’s 6-digit SIDO number printed below in small black text.
  2. On a small badge applied to the front edge of the driver’s and passenger’s front door cards. This badge had large silver “GT” text with the vehicle’s build number printed on a black background.
  3. On a small metal badge on the vehicle’s key fob (the same style badge as applied to the front passenger’s side door trim described above).

 

TVE build number allocation:[27]

  • Australian market production GT: Vehicles are believed to have received a TVE build number between 001 and 239 (see example in images).
  • New Zealand market GT: TVE build numbers issued between NZ1 and NZ20 (see example in images).
  • South African market GT: TVE build numbers included 240 and 241.
  • Pre-production GTs: 11 pre-production / pilot vehicles were built (for the purpose of testing and as press vehicles). These cars were allocated build numbers of P01 – P11, and were sold to the Australian market.

 

We note that the GT build numbers were not issued consecutively according to the vehicle's build date. It has been confirmed on several forums that you could order a specific TVE build number (assuming the chosen number was still available).

 

6. Mechanical features - 1997 Ford Falcon EL GT

Mechanical features – Ford Falcon EL GT [28] [29] [30] [31] [32] [33] [34]

Like its predecessor the EB GT, the V8 engine applied to the EL GT was similar in specification to Fords SVO Mustang Cobra, with adaptations by TVE for local conditions and Australian compliance. Revised specifications were given to SVO to build the engines in the Cleveland plant in Ohio, before shipping them to Broadmeadows. This engine produced more power than Ford’s standard 5.0l V8, however, did not represent any major departure from the EB GT’s engine specification, other than an increased torque range. The performance of this engine was achieved mainly through camshaft, intake and cylinder head improvements as designed by Ford USA’s Special Vehicle Operations / Power Products division. The majority of the remaining drive train consisted of components shared with the XR models, however, other enhancements were made with respect to the transmission and handling, as outlined below.

 

Performance figures:

  • 0 – 100kph: 6.97s (claimed), 7.03s (as tested by Motor Magazine, March 1997), 8.08s (as tested by Wheels Magazine, April 1997)
  • 400m / ¼ mile: 15.06s (claimed), 15.00 seconds (as tested by Motor Magazine, March 1997), 15.76 (as tested by Wheels Magazine, April 1997).
  • 1600kg towing capacity.
  • Power (DIN): 200kW (270bhp) @ 4,700 rpm.
  • Torque (DIN): 420Nm (310lb-ft) @ 3,700 rpm.

 

Engine:[26]

  • 5.0l / 4942cc (302ci) fuel injected OHV 16-valve V8.
  • Bore & stroke: 102 x 76mm (4.00 x 3.00in).
  • Compression ratio: 9.0:1.

 

Head design:

  • Cast iron crossflow Ford SVO GT40 heads were fitted with crane roller rockers, providing a flow of 196/129cfm. This flow was achieved through larger inlet and exhaust valves. This is a significant increase on the flow achieved by the standard E7 V8 heads used on the EL XR8 and other EL V8 models. Inlet and exhaust valves also contained an inner damper spring. Greater valve lift is achieved by using 1.7:1 roller rockers compared with the stock 1.60:1 rockers, and the combustion chamber gave a more efficient burn than the standard E7 heads.

 

Fuel ignition and engine management system:

  • A multi-point electronic fuel injection system was applied with high flow injectors (identified by their blue body) and electronically controlled ignition, which used Ford’s EEC5 engine management system, uniquely altered for the GT. The part number of the engine management system was 96DT 12A650 HB for manual vehicles and 96DT 12A650 JB for automatic vehicles.
  • A free-flow alloy inlet manifold was fitted, and throttle body diameter increased by 14% to 65mm (up from 61mm). Mass flow sensor diameter increased by 34% to 74mm (previously 55mm). A Tickford intake snorkel was applied, as well as the addition of a venturi to the air cleaner assembly.

 

Exhaust:

  • Low back pressure (50% reduction compared to standard EL V8) dual exhaust system: 2.5 inch twin pipe free flow, with a 4 to 1 extractor system (42mm stainless steel tube). The extractors were coated with special ceramic material to give a dull chrome finish and to reduce heat in the engine bay, removing need for heat shields. This system was based on the EL XR8 with flow enhancements. The exhaust system passed through twin catalytic converters and mufflers.

 

Transmission:

Manual gearbox specifications

  • Reverse gear idler has been upgraded in strength.
  • Gear lever fulcrum lifted for shorter shifts.
  • Softer detent spring used (7lb vs. 10lb) for faster shifting.
  • Clutch same as ED “Sprint”
  • T5 5-speed manual: The manual transmission had a heavy duty SVO clutch applied (268mm Veleo plate with 40% more torque capacity than standard).

 

Gear ratios:

  • 1st: 2.95:1
  • 2nd: 1.94:1
  • 3rd: 1.34:1
  • 4th: 1.00:1
  • 5th: 0.73:1
  • Reverse: 2.76:1
  • LSD axle ratio: 3.27:1

 

Automatic gearbox specifications:

  • BTR95LE 4-speed automatic or BTRT5 5-speed manual Borg-Warner transmission was available, and all cars were fitted with a limited slip differential.
  • Type BTR 95LE 4-speed + overdrive automatic transmission, with lock up torque converter and electronically recalibrated shift points through the use of a separate EEC-IV management system. These transmissions had US-made gear sets installed in the Australian-made BTR housing. Ratios, however, were the same as the standard Falcon unit as follows:
  • Tickford persuaded BTR to develop a form of adaptive shift for the Aussie designed and developed 4-speed. The automatic transmission in the GT was fitted with the following revisions:
    • Planetary gear set.
    • Pinion shafts supporting pinion gears have been cross drilled to improve 
      lubrication and heat removal at high speeds.
    • Centre support shaft has been cross drilled and a fluid passage through 
      the centre aids heat removal and lubrication at high speeds.
    • Transmission Control Module is unique to the GT
    • Different shift maps that change automatically as dictated by the driving 
      style of the driver at the time.

 

Gear ratios:

  • 1st: 2.39:1
  • 2nd: 1.45:1
  • 3rd: 1.00:1
  • 4th: 0.68:1
  • Reverse: 2.09:1
  • Rear LSD axle ratio: 3.45:1

 

Handling

 

Steering:

  • Power assisted variable ratio rack and pinion steering.
  • The steering rack applied to the GT was a Reman brand, the same as applied to the ED Falcon Sprint, having approximately 2.9 turns lock to lock (versus 3 turns for the standard Falcon). This reduces travel and allows clearance for the larger tyres, and gives the GT a turning circle of 11.5m. There should be a letter “G” stamped into the rack housing according to forum discussion. If anyone has an image of this tag or stamping, please contact us so we can add the example to this section of the guide.

 

Brakes:

  • 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with enlarged standard compound brake pads were fitted.
  • Front discs had ventilated 329mm rotors (standard EL rotors were 287mm). The rotors were 28mm thick, (standard EL rotors were 25mm). The front brakes had twin-piston PBR Tickford branded callipers, as used on the Mustang Cobra, and provided a 12% increase in the pad-swept area compared to the standard EL brakes. The size of the front brake callipers meant the front spindles and brake hoses were unique to the GT to allow clearance.
  • Rear brakes had solid 299mm rotors with standard non-Tickford callipers.

 

Suspension:

  • Front and rear stabilizer bars (sway bars) with urethane bushes. Front anti-roll bar was 28mm (up from 27mm on the XR8).  Rear anti-roll bar was 24mm.
  • Tie bar, lower arm pivot, upper suspension bar and anti-roll bar urethane bushes have been upgraded due to the wider tyres.
  • Live rear axle with 4 trailing arms and Watts linkage.
  • Munroe Australia 6-valve dampers, with single rate coil springs. These springs are colour coded red and are unique to the GT.
  • Twin-tube telescopic shock absorbers. The shock absorbers were also colour coded red.

 

Wheels and tyres:

  • Unique 17 x 8.5 inch 6-spoke ROH alloy wheels were fitted to the GT (including a full-size spare), finished in a pale silver-gold colour. We have not yet been able to confirm the precise paint code, so please contact us if you have further information and we will update this section. Wheels were originally fitted with Yokohama A510 245/40 VR17 tyres and had locking wheel nuts with a special coded adaptor socket.[13]

 

Aerodynamics:

  • Overall, a 40% reduction in lift was achieved from the body kit design, with a drag coefficient of 0.31.

 

Driveline:

  • A Hydratrak limited slip differential was developed for the GT by BTR, and features a unique fluid coupling unit. This system smoothly increases torque transfer to the slower rotating wheel
  • Axles are semi floating and are unique to the GT, due to the Hydratrak differential.
  • The drive shafts fitted to the manual transmission have an 840Hz slip yoke damper and no internal damper. The drive shafts fitted to the auto transmission have neither a slip yoke nor internal damper.
  • Tickford also worked with Dana to develop a lightweight aluminium driveshaft wrapped in a 3mm thick carbon-fibre sheath. This makes the shafts stiffer yet lighter, and the new driveshaft was intended to eliminate the chronic driveshaft flex problem which can limit high speeds.
