A clean and original example of the 300CE Cabriolet - an appreciating classic. This one was advertised in April 2019 asking $17,000 USD. Looks well worn but qute original - a few items of the trim and hood could do with a tidy up. Looks to be finished in Arctic White. If you have one, add yours to the register here :)

Silver Grey ESP (originally would have been over Charcoal) - in excellent condition, only a few small bits need attention in this example. This one is owned by a friend, and we had the opportunity to do a video / take a few snaps if the cars whilst we were at his place. This ESP has our favourite trim, the Sierra Tan. Needs to get the charcoal lower body panels to really look the part though.

Check out the other ESPs on the register below. If you have one, sign-up and add yours!

For sale: 1978 Mercedes 450 SLC

One of approximately 4382 built for the 1978 year, this Astral Silver 450 SLC is in excellent original condition, ready for the next enthusiast. The car is an Australian delivered example, last registered in Victoria in 2018.

The car has been used as a daily driver until recently, and over its 40+ years on the road has covered just over 200,000km. The car runs well, the engine is sound and the brakes are strong.  The body is in good condition with only a couple of minor blemishes which could easily be tidied up.  The blue cloth interior trim is also in excellent condition, only needing a clean, with the seat trim being well protected under the covers for many years.

The car is no longer registered and will be sold without a roadworthy certificate. However, a roadworthy certificate was issued for the vehicle in October 2018, so very little work is expected to be necessary in order to have the car registered again.

You don’t see many SLCs around and their production numbers were far lower than their convertible counterparts. If you’re looking for a classic Benz coupe and want something rare, the SLC is a great choice.

For sale: 1983 Ford XE Fairmont Ghia

This “Sovereign metallic” Fairmont Ghia would make an ideal and easy project for the XE enthusiast – notably having very little rust in the body. Although the vehicle’s interior has been disassembled, the full original (and immaculate) trim is included with the sale, as are the original snowflake wheels. The seller notes the car runs well, with no obvious mechanical issues.

The seller has owned this vehicle for just under a year, and due to having several new projects, needs it gone. The car has travelled only 217,000km from new on its original engine, and its overall condition suggests it was not a coastal car. Not only is this evidenced by the state of the body, but the cloth Chamois interior (which is currently in dry storage) is in amazing condition. The roof lining in the car is also fully intact and although slightly marked would clean up very well, as would the carpets which display no signs of serious wear.

This particular car is a September 1983 build, and has to be one of the best unrestored bodies on the market when it comes to rust. It’s certainly one of the most solid unrestored XEs we’ve come across in recent times, and even the majority of the paintwork is in great condition. The main exception to this is the roof, which has seen the clear coat deteriorate, and would likely need a re-spray.

When we inspected the car, there were only small areas of spot rust or surface rust, and a couple of rust holes on the bonnet. There is also an area we spotted at base of the rear driver’s side quarter panel which may need some attention before it spreads. Those areas have been detailed as best possible in the photographs, and are relatively minor. There are also a couple of small dents in the body, the driver’s guard being one location. The rear valance panel has been bent out of shape and would likely need replacing.

This would make an easy restoration project with only minor body repairs required, a bit of paint and reassembly with the existing trim which is already in brilliant condition.

At $8,500, the seller notes the price is negotiable. For more information or to arrange an inspection, please sign-in and click the “contact seller” button at the top of this page.

For sale: 1982 Ford XE Fairmont Ghia

1982 Ford Fairmont Ghia XE SOLD.png Click to enlarge

This XE Fairmont Ghia is an excellent original example, retaining its factory “Chestnut” paint and “Chamois” leather trim, making an ideal project for the XE enthusiast. The seller has had this car for less than a year, and having taken on several other projects in that time has decided that several vehicles in the collection must go.

This particular car was built in April 1982, and retains its matching number 4.1 alloy head 6, with 3-speed T-bar auto. The car has travelled a fairly hefty 391,000km, but still runs and drives well, and from a mechanical perspective needs little work to get back on the road. All doors open and close with ease, and panels are straight and accident free. Only the front grille / bumper needs some adjustment.

What struck us most upon inspection of this car is the state of the interior seat trim, and door cards. The seats are in amazing condition other than a small cut on the driver’s bolster – and the need for some leather conditioner on the driver’s seat where it’s showing some signs of discolouration. It appears as if no one has ever sat in the back seat, and few in the front passenger seat. When we inspected the car, we removed the front seat covers for what seemed the first time in decades, exposing the excellent Chamois leather. The roof lining has dropped a bit over the car’s 35 years, with a couple of tears at the rear, and would ultimately need to be stitched / cleaned up or replaced. There is also a crack in the front passenger corner of the plastic console – a new centre console panel can easily be sourced..

Although the paint is faded, a wash, polish and wax would see it turn up quite well on the majority of panels, subject to a few touch ups on the front bumper and grille. Prior to its current location, it is believed the car has been garaged most of its life, and as such has managed to avoid rust spreading to critical levels. Compared to many other XD/XE/XF models we’ve seen, the rust in this car is fairly limited. On inspection of the car we tried to capture the effected areas in the photographs, as best as possible. There are a few spots in the door jams that need attention, the worst of which being a 4cm strip at the base of the passenger B pillar. The other areas look to be isolated and not to have spread more than a couple of centimeters each. There are a few small spots under the mudguard edges, but the underside of the sills look to be reasonably solid other than small spots and surface rust. The roof, boot gutters, and front guards all appear solid, and the only other spot worth mentioning is the windscreen scuttle panel (a small coin sized rust spot), and a 20 cent sized spot on the passenger bulkhead under the hood. The bulkhead is otherwise completely solid.

At $10,500, the seller has advised they are open to offers, and encourages any prospective purchaser to have a closer look at the car. This would make an excellent project to restore as is, or modify to your personal liking from a good base. For sale: 1969 Mercedes W109 300SEL 6.3

This 1969 300SEL 6.3 is a beautiful example of one of the most desirable Mercedes sedans, which in its day held the title as the world’s fastest 4-door. There were just 6,526 of the SEL 6.3 built worldwide, and few examples are on offer in Australia.

An advanced and sophisticated luxury car for its time, the SEL features factory Bosch fuel injection on the renowned M100 V8, producing 184kw. This takes the 1.8-tonnes of luxury to 100kph in just 6.6 seconds. A 4-speed automatic transmission, locking diff, electric windows, pneumatic central locking, factory sunroof, dual circuit four wheel ventilated disc brakes and self-levelling suspension put the SEL is in a class of its own when compared to other vehicles of the late 1960s.

This particular example is offered by a collector in south-west Sydney. The car was purchased from Toowoomba Queensland, where it is believed to have resided with an elderly gentleman for the last 30 years who recently lost his licence forcing the sale last year. The current owner is consolidating his projects, and will sell the car with Queensland registration.

The paint and bodywork is in excellent condition, with no signs of serious rust anywhere. The car underwent a restoration approximately 20 years ago, and has essentially been stored and used very little since. When we photographed the vehicle, we didn’t have the opportunity to give it a clean, but note the paint is brilliant, and will shine like new once given just a rinse. As with most old Mercedes, even after 50 years the doors all close as if the car was brand new. A sample of that has been included in the video below.

Inside it’s a similar story, with the tan perforated trim presenting in immaculate condition, along with the carpet, door trims and roof lining. All switches, dashboard panels and timber trim are in excellent condition.

Mechanically, the current owner has no issues to report, and the car runs like clockwork. To save at the pump, the car was converted to dedicated LPG fuel in late 2005. The V8 runs and sounds great – a small sample of which has been included in the below video. The factory sunroof and all electric windows all work perfectly.

We expect to see prices of the 300SEL continue their upward trend, which has even carried the smaller capacity 3.5l vehicles to impressive levels. If you’re looking for one of the more secure automotive investments over the longer term, the 6.3 should be on your list.

It's rare you see these over in Europe - however, this example was offered on autoscout in Fabruary 2019. Asking EUR 23,000, this original stratos blue car looks in excellent condition, with only some modification being undertaken to the trunk lid. Unfortunately we haven't been able to obtain the chassis number for this example.

The 10th example on our Studebaker Daytona convertible register.
