One of the iconic hatchbacks of the 80s and early 90s, the Peugeot 205 GTI is fast becoming a classic of the era. The shorter stroke 1.6 litre engine, like the one featured in this particular car, is famed for being revvy and eager when compared to the more torquier 1.9L version of the engine (available alongside the 1.6 in the 205 GTI from 1987). This particular model of the GTI (Phase 1.5) came with an improved engine when compared to the phase 1, which featured a redesigned head with larger valves. The later engine produced 86kW compared to the earlier 77kW of the previous generation GTI.
Some of the competing cars of the Era were the Golf GTI, Ford Escort and Honda's Civic, just to name a few. These cars cemented this era of automotive engineering as one of the greatest, with significant increases in power being produced thanks to the broad introduction of technologies such as turbo charging and electronic fuel injection.
This particular GTI is would make a good project car. The seller confirms that up until a few years ago this car was running strong, but has been sitting in a backyard ever since. It does however have a genuine GTI chassis number, no rust and a straight body. A full restoration would be needed to bring it back to its former glory.
This one sold on Ebay Australia for $2500 AUD at the start of April 2017
