This 220 SE coupe is one of 776 factory right hand drive vehicles produced, and one of only 214 Australian delivered cars – the current owner having the Australian dealer import certificate. This is a matching numbers example in excellent condition, with the images provided taken at the 3rd annual Dural Men’s Shed Car Show of September 2018.
Originally a black car (DB 040), the current owner restored the vehicle in a period Mercedes colour – Red Metallic (DB 051) with a full bare metal re-spray. The finish is in excellent condition, and all panels on the vehicle appear straight, including the sills and undercarriage. The metallic red brings out the best in the coupe body style, arguably one of the most elegant designs of the 1960s. During the rebuild, all bright-work was restored and body rubbers replaced, and the car is ready to be enjoyed by the next owner/investor.
The full-leather trim has been fully restored and a new woodgrain dashboard fitted. The air-conditioning system was not factory fitted to this particular vehicle, but is a practical upgrade which has been beautifully incorporated. The period radio fascia conceals a modern head unit for convenience, but otherwise the dashboard is to original specification, with the iconic timber work in perfect condition.
Under the hood is the Bosch mechanically fuel injected 6-cylinder engine, mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission – advanced systems at a time when carburettors and 3-speed autos were fitted to most competitor vehicles for at least the next decade. The engine and transmission are both the original units, having been regularly serviced and highly maintained, and the engine bay presents beautifully. The current owner confirms the car runs well, with all mechanical systems in top condition.
If you’re looking for a rare Australian delivered Mercedes, this is a great opportunity.
