The last of the over-engineered Mercedes cars, and surely one of Bruno Sacco’s finest designs, the C140 is the king of the S-Class coupes. There are never more than a handful of these for sale at any one time, owing to the C140s very low production numbers (and particularly low sales numbers in Australia, having a price tag of nearly $300,000 when new).
This CL500 was built in June 1997 and is finished in Smoke Silver, with Mushroom Nappa leather interior. The car has been well looked after, and has low k’s for its age. This example is particularly special because it has the very rare “Leather Exclusive” factory option (Code 515 on the data plate). This option provides for two tone mushroom leather trim, a leather trimmed dashboard, door card and rear card arm rests, console and sun visors, with suede headliner. The Leather Exclusive option is usually applied to selected V12 coupes, and is rarely specified on the 500 models.
Being a later series “CL” badged car, it features several specifications not present on the 1995 and earlier C140 vehicles, including the upgraded (non-biodegradable) wiring harness, 5-speed transmission, side airbags, front and rear “Parktronic” parking sensors and updated tail lights (just to name a few).
The original Smoke Silver paint is in great condition for the car’s age, and all panels on the car are straight, with no rust anywhere to be seen. The seller is only the third owner, and its condition suggests that it has been kept undercover its whole life. Inside, the leather is in good condition throughout. Importantly, the driver’s seat bolsters are in great shape, and there are no serious tears / cuts anywhere in the leather fabric. The timber trim accents (which appear to be the “Chestnut” option), are all immaculate and stand out nicely against the mushroom trim.
Mechanically the car is excellent, runs very smoothly with no oil leaks or problem known of. It has won multiple awards at concourse events over the years, and the current owner has retained all of those records as part of the car’s file. The car comes with its two original keys, plus the original “Swiss Card Key” which was issued to owners when these were new.
