This identification guide has been written for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Integra Type R, including the DC2 coupe, the Type Rx coupe and the DB8 sedan (but excludes the Mugen edition car). The Integra Type R has a large global following and was available in many markets from new, however, the JDM model is seen as particularly desirable due to several differences, including superior performance.
Although the Integra Type R is a significantly different car to its standard Integra counterpart, it is very similar in appearance, and often standard cars can easily be misrepresented as Type R models. This guide aims to provide a good summary of information confirming what a prospective buyer or restorer should be looking for, to confirm whether a car is a genuine Type R JDM Integra. This guide includes information relating to the external features, interior features, paint colours, mechanical features and of course the engine and chassis numbers applicable to the DC2/DB8 JDM Integra Type R.
Period of manufacture:
1995 – 2000 (like most vehicles, Integra’s were badged as the year following that of their manufacture). The sedan Type R was introduced in 1997, and the Rx was introduced in December 1999.
Number produced:
A total of approximately 29,995 Integra Type R JDM cars were produced.

The JDM Integra Type R had the following exterior features, which make a good starting point for identification of a genuine car:
The JDM Integra Type R DC2/DB8 had the following interior features:
Type Rx (available from December 1999) came factory standard fitted with motorized folding mirrors, keyless entry, power antenna, amber dashboard clock, blue tinted polished carbon fibre style dashboard accent panels (including centre console panel, electric window door panels, and front air vent surround panels), drilled alloy sports pedals, Gathers CD player with 6 speaker audio system, and a uniquely numbered centre console “Type R” badge. See images for a better description of all these features. Many of these features were options on earlier models. According to our research, the Rx was only available as a coupe.
7 paint colours were available on the JDM Integra Type R, as outlined below. The original colour for the car should be confirmed on a small white square sticker in the driver or passenger door jamb (below the lock latch in the B pillar – see images).
Certain colours were available for certain body shapes, year models, and with certain interior trim options. These are shown in the attached chart contained in the images.
An example of each of the colours has also been provided in the images. Championship White is by far the most common colour for the JDM Integra Type R, with fewer cars available in Yellow, Silver, Black and Red.
The chassis number on a JDM Honda Integra Type R will appear on the blue VIN/chassis plate (riveted to the bonnet slam panel in the engine bay), with a matching number stamped into the centre of the bulkhead / firewall. These locations are described in further detail in the attached images.
The prefix at the top of the blue chassis plate should be one of the following:
E-DC2 = 2 door coupe with B18C engine (built between October 1995 and July 1999)
E-DB8 = 4 door sedan with B18C engine (built between October 1995 and July 1999)
GF-DC2 = 2 door coupe with B18C engine built in the final year (July 1999 – July 2000, including the Rx)
GF-DB8 = 4 door sedan with B18C engine built in the final year (July 1999 – July 2000)
The chassis number itself is located on the second line from the bottom on the blue chassis plate, above where it should say “Type R”. This same number should be stamped into the bulkhead. The chassis number will begin with one of the below prefixes, which confirms the vehicle’s age, followed by 4 digits being the unique chassis number for that particular car:
1996 Spec R cars:
DC2-110 or DB8-110 – built from October 1995 - August 1996.
DC2-120 or DB8-120 – built from September 1996 - December 1997.
1998 Spec R cars:
DC2-130 or DB8-130 – built from January 1998 - June 1999.
DC2-140 or DB8-140 – Built from July 1999 – July 2001 (including Rx).
Note, Rx cars can be identified by their “DC2-140” chassis number, along with their uniquely numbered plaque located under the handbrake in the centre console. No other JDM Type R’s had a numbered plaque.
Engine & Gearbox numbers:
Thee engine number for a JDM Integra Type R should have a prefix “B18C”, followed by a 7 digit engine number.
Note, however, that the JDM GSR also had the same prefix, so to confirm it is in fact a Type R motor, you have to look at the casting numbers on the engine head, just above the exhaust ports. You should see “PR3” cast into the head (as shown in the images), which should confirm it is a Type R head, and therefore likely a genuine motor. Unfortunately PR3 was also stamped into some non type R heads used on other models, so additional checks can be done if you are concerned.
If you want to check further, take the valve cover off and look at the valve springs. The Type R Integra has double valve springs on both the intake and exhaust ports. Although not easy to spot, the Type R heads also reportedly have green paint on the distributor side of the head (may have worn off significantly over time - see image example).
A not so easy way to further confirm the authenticity of the engine would be to check that the conrods and Pistons have “P73” stamped on them. This is obviously not a practical check unless you are purchasing a motor in pieces.
There are two possible gearbox types for the JDM Integra Type R. The type of gearbox will be determined by the vehicle’s year of manufacture as outlined below. Both gearboxes came standard with a limited slip differential (LSD).
1996 – 1997 JDM Integra Type R:
Barcode Prefix = S80 with J4D printed in black text above “LSD” on the transmission casing. This gearbox has a final drive of 4.4.
1998 – 2001 JDM Integra Type R
Barcode prefix = S80 with N3E printed in Black text above “LSD” on the transmission casing. This gearbox has a final drive of 4.785.
Examples of the barcode number and black lettering LSD, J4D and N3E are shown in the images.
The JDM Honda Integra Type R had the following mechanical features:
